Cycling in Devon

A Devon cottage makes a great base for cycling or mountain biking. Devon attracts thousands of holiday makers every year. Some come just for the beaches but an increasing number are attracted by the superb environment for outdoor activities. And each year an increasing number of road cyclists and mountain bikers descend on Devon.

Devon has a huge network of lanes, byways and bridleways mostly with very little traffic but with fantastic views. Up on Dartmoor there is great road cycling and mountain biking. The terrain is hilly but the rides are very rewarding with fantastic views across the moors. For fitter riders capable of 50 miles or more it's perfectly possible to take a route that includes Dartmoor and some stunning coast roads. The section from Kingsbridge taking in the Salcombe Estuary and the coast road via Torcross and Blackpool Sands to Dartmouth is particularly picturesque and highly recommended.

Organised Rides in Devon

There are also some organised events such as the very popular Dartmoor Classic Cyclosportive see organised every summer in June by the Mid Devon Cycling Club. But you need to enter quick because it usually sells out within a couple of weeks of entries opening in the Autumn. Easier to get into are a couple of the newer organised rides such as the South Hams Hammer and the Moor to Sea Cyclosportive taking place in September.

Mountain Biking in Devon

For mountain bikers of all levels the prepared Forest Commission circuits of Haldon Forest Park are well worth a visit see Here the routes are graded into Blue, Red and Black with rides to suit every level of rider including children trying out mountain biking for the first time. And there’s a pleasant cafe and a shop where you can hire mountain bikes
